The Canadian pool industry is struggling with a shortage of pool tables.
Some of the biggest names in the industry are struggling to find pools that are big enough for the growing numbers of Canadians that want to play pool.
“I think the numbers of people coming into the pool business is a great indication that the demand is there,” said Michael Tardif, president of Pool Canada.
He’s not alone.
Tardif and others say the shortage is partly due to a lack of government regulations.
Pool Canada has taken steps to make pool equipment more affordable, but its biggest challenge may be keeping the pool clean.
While Tardim says the pool industry has seen a significant jump in demand for pool tables, it’s not all that easy.
In the past year, the government has cracked down on pool tables as part of the Canada 2020 plan to modernize the country’s public and private pools.
The federal government has promised to modernise the countrys pool facilities, which are supposed to make them less dangerous, less congested and less expensive.
Pool Canada is trying to fill the pool gap.
Tardi says his company’s goal is to fill pool tables with 20,000 tables in five years.
“We’re just starting to make a dent in that gap, but we are working to get there,” he said.
The first pool tables will be made by Pool Canada and are expected to be ready for the 2019 season.
The federal government says that, as of April 2019, Pool Canada had more than 20,200 pool tables in its fleet, up from just under 10,000 by the end of February.
Tardedif says that number is growing every year, even as the pool table industry is in a tough spot.
“There are more people in Canada than ever before,” he told the CBC’s Daybreak.
“We’re seeing an increase in people coming in.
So we’re in a position where we need to be able to accommodate a lot more people, so that pool tables can be bigger and bigger.”
He says the biggest challenge is finding pool tables that are affordable for the new generations of Canadians.
“The first thing is that it’s very, very expensive,” Tardis said.
“If you’re making a lot of money and you’re a professional, then you don’t want to buy a $10,000 table.”
He said the cost of a table ranges from $1,000 to $2,000.
Tardsi says he has spent more than $30,000 on pool table supplies, including a set of 30-inch tables and a set made by the Japanese company Shure.
But the pool tables he buys are not made in Canada.
With the government cracking down on the pool room, the pool operators and the pool owners are in a difficult spot.
Pool operators are hoping that the government will offer some relief.
“I’ve been on the fence, but it’s hard to find the pools that meet the needs of the pool people that I do work with,” said John Broussard, the president of The Pool Room Association of Canada.
“I think we need a bit of a relief from that government to allow us to grow and provide better facilities for our pool people.”
The federal pool table law, passed in 1991, has changed many times since then.
It allows pool operators to use imported pool tables and sets, but requires pool owners to install new pool tables at no charge to their pool customers.
